Emotions exploded inside Kayla, their shrapnel sizzling on her lips and cheeks. Distress after hearing Vincent’s voice on Nana’s burner phone. Horror about what that meant for Nana. Outrage for all Vincent had done to her family.

“Let me speak to my grandmother,” she demanded.

“You murdered my dear associate on that train in France.” Vincent’s syrupy and mocking tone ramped up Kayla’s fury.

“No one is dear to you. That man on the train was a spy you sent. He pulled Martin from the train, and I tried to help your dear associate. Then I had to escape when you sent someone after me. Put Nana on the phone. Now.”

“I would never hurt my sweet Beverly. You know that.”

“Like you never hurt your wife and all those prostitutes?”

Rather than fill the silence by telling him everything she knew about him, she let the quiet linger until he spoke.

“What did Yves tell you?” His voice carried a sinister tone; his laugh mocked her.

Kayla warned herself to be careful. Losing her temper and revealing anything Vincent didn’t already know about her new family wouldn’t help Nana. “What do you think he told me?”

His laugh was sickening. “I wouldn’t think of giving away all of his secrets. I suggest you ask Yves.”

She dropped the subject. “What do you want from me?”

“My diamond, remember. I already told you.”

“I don’t have it. It wasn’t in France or Australia. I’ve never seen it outside the Louvre. Give me Nana.”

“Beverly is sleeping. She’ll continue to sleep until you remember where you and your parents hid that diamond.”

Kayla’s knees gave out. “What did you do to her?”

“Nothing to cause permanent damage. Yet. Use the detective skills you learned, dear. Beverly and I will be waiting for you.”

Monique moved over to let Kayla take her place at the table.

Kayla could feel Yves, Monique, and Celeste watching her. She feared looking at them would weaken her resolve to stay calm. She buried her eyes in her palm, tried not to think of the piano wire Vincent had used on her mother, and listened for background noise on his end.

Nothing.

She spoke slowly to choose the right words.

“I found many things in France and Australia. For instance, I learned you used a security guard to steal the diamond from the Louvre, and my parents took it from him. You lied to me. What I don’t understand is why you murdered Mom and Dad before they could return it to the Louvre or tell you where it was.”

“Don’t forget about the other friend of your parents who died shortly after they did. Poor fellow drowned.”

“You’re fully aware my parents wouldn’t have involved their teenaged daughter in whatever happened to that diamond.”

“No problem, dear. I’ll just keep Beverly here with me until you call this number and give me instructions for picking up the diamond. Don’t take too long. My patience has a limit of four more days.”

“That diamond has been missing for years, and now you expect me to find it in four days?”

He had already disconnected.
